This pragmatic workbook offers evidence-based skills grounded in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to help you find lasting relief from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

If you’ve experienced trauma, you should know that there is nothing wrong with you. Trauma is a normal reaction to an abnormal event. Sometimes, the symptoms of trauma persist long after the traumatic situation has ceased. This is what we call PTSD—in other words, the “trauma after the trauma.” This happens when the aftereffects of trauma—such anxiety, depression, anger, fear, insomnia, and even addiction—end up causing more ongoing harm than the trauma itself. So, how can you start healing?

With this powerful and proven-effective workbook, you’ll find practical exercises for overcoming trauma using mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. You’ll learn how to be present in the moment and identity the things that trigger your trauma. You’ll also find activities and exercises to help you cope with stress, manage intense emotions, navigate conflict with others, and change unhealthy thought patterns that keep you stuck. Finally, you’ll find practical materials for review and closure, so you can take what you’ve learned out into the world with you.

If you’re ready to move past your trauma and start living your life again, this workbook will help guide you, one step at a time. The practical interventions in this guide can be used on their own or in conjunction with therapy.

This is not a theoretical book like so many out there that talk about superficial things such as exercise and meditation to rid yourself of critical life traumas--that doesn't work any way for PTSD. This book gives you writing prompts to sit with yourself and thoughts to challenge your thinking on certain issuess and analyze and process the reasons behind your actions with yourself. However, I would definitely advise that you should be in therarpy with someone while going through this book. It's honestly not easy to sit down and make yourself work through these tasks if you are already dealing with insurmounatble traumas and emotional hurdles from events. You may have the great sincerity to work through the book, but may just find your emotions too challenging to tackle and sit with on your own. So if you can get a psychologist or therapist and then use this as a supplement then sure. It will help you work through some things. It’s more of a processing journal and a supplement to a therapy program.

I purchased this workbook following a 2-day DBT certification course taught by Dr. Reutter. This book does not necessarily provide the foundational basics of DBT. If you're looking for excruciating DBT detail, this is not the book for you. This book is for anyone who is looking to apply DBT to a specific population, those with PTSD and trauma-related disorders. This is a workbook, not an academic textbook, so even clients can use this as a guide in therapy. It contains worksheets with lots of helpful questions. The worksheets are very useful in guiding clinicians through sessions with DBT material. Also, it is a great book for studying the talk therapy process prior to sessions with clients so the clinician has an understanding of how the session should flow. Clinicians get stuck too! This book will be certain to unstick you so you can help clients move forward in becoming better at emotional regulation.

Still working through this workbook with clients. It’s definitely not Linehan’s model, but takes skills from her methodology in some broad ways and applies it to how people are impacted by trauma. It actually goes by very slow, and can be complex and not very concrete. It’s a good book if you have clients who can stick with it and stay preset and mindful.

I loved this book to use with clients. It is a nice mix of DBT and other models/interventions to support healing. It’s primarily DBT but they do integrate some MI, CBT, and ACT to the book. I use it with youth in juvenile hall and out patient clients....which both populations seem to benefit from it. They break dow aspects of mindfulness that make it a little easier for the client to practice on their own.

Kirby Reutter expertly guides the mental health practitioner and the trauma sufferer, alike, through the pursuit of balance, utilizing DBT techniques cherry-picked for their utility. Reutter patiently and effectively explains the processes with a teacher's heart, building on and reinforcing concepts previously delivered. He is a delight to learn from in person; reading his writing is the next best thing to listening to him directly! This book will be a go-to compendium many times in my work with clients! “One of a kind self-help workbook, that conquers various essential aspects regarding taking control of your symptoms and getting back in the driver’s seat of your life. A very thorough, straight forward, and hands-on approach to overcoming Trauma and PTSD. Dr. Reutter really nails the therapy toolbox. I would highly recommend this book as a complimentary source to therapy, or for one who chooses to attempt to work through things on his or her own.” –Amber Weiss, LMHC, NCC, Private practice in Manhattan.
