Discover the innovative intersection of somatic therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), featuring 5 core practices to transform modern therapeutic approaches.

Enhance your clinical practice and patient outcomes by skillfully uniting body and mind through an evidence-based therapeutic modality—endorsed by leaders in the field, including Richard Schwartz.

Somatic Internal Family Systems Therapy introduces a cutting-edge therapeutic modality that merges the elements of somatic therapy, such as movement, touch, and breathwork, with the established principles of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Authored by Susan McConnell, this multifaceted approach is crafted for therapists, clinicians, somatic practitioners, mental health professionals, and anyone interested in innovative healing techniques. A valuable contribution to mental health treatment, this guide offers a new horizon for those engaged in the well-being of others.
This comprehensive, bestselling guide presents:

  • 5 core practices: somatic awareness, conscious breathing, radical resonance, mindful movement, and attuned touch, designed for seamless integration into therapeutic work.
  • Strategies to apply these practices in addressing a range of clinical conditions including depression, trauma, anxiety, eating disorders, chronic illness, and attachment disorders.
  • Techniques to assist clients in identifying, understanding, and reconciling their ‘inner worlds’ or subpersonalities, leading to improved emotional health and behavior.
  • A compelling combination of scientific insights, experiential practices, and real-world clinical stories that illuminate the theory and application of Somatic IFS.

Highly regarded mental health professionals, such as IFS founder Richard Schwartz, have applauded this essential guide. By weaving together holistic healing wisdom, modern neuroscience, and somatic practices expertise, this book serves as a crucial resource for psychotherapists across various disciplines and laypersons seeking an embodied self.

This book is fabulous! I am an IFS therapist and author who years ago assisted with some trainings led by Susan McConnell, so I already knew that she was top-notch. This book reflects that in spades. It is very well written, so it is easy to follow with your emotions, not just your mind. It brings home how to integrate somatic work more fully into IFS (the body is already in IFS to some extent). I was really impressed with how she goes beyond just incorporating body awareness into IFS and does so much more. Highly recommended.

This framework for healing trauma has already been life-changing for me, and I'm not even completely done chapter 2 yet. I acknowledge that having done a lot of trauma-healing work before reading this book has helped a lot. I have been able to do some of the exercises by myself and identify/commune with my various parts. Some parts were more difficult to connect with by myself, so I've been working with my therapist on that. I look forward to reading the rest of it and working on things like conscious breathing, etc. Thank you so much for this beautiful framework.

I'm a therapist who mainly uses IFS, and I was wondering about how to implement more body connection with my clients. She offers in depth exercises that could be helpful, but at least so far, she has had a lasting impact on me in terms of resourcing with earth, air, fire, water, and ether, and its easier in my head to lead my clients to connections with these after having read the book as opposed to before it, and I'd say thats even a good place to start. Especially since most of my clients have a hard time grounding in their bodies due to trauma, this grounding to the elements is another form of resourcing. Once we do a little bit of that, its easier for them to access parts. I really liked the book overall.

This meaty book reads like poetry. I felt mesmerized while reading it. McConnell's writing style seemed to anchor me in my body while engaging my mind. I've loved IFS a long while and have read most books on the subject. This one offers such an important aspect not covered in depth anywhere else -- how to integrate different somatic techniques within the framework of IFS. Given her background and years of experience, I can't imagine this book being written by anyone else. Highly recommended for anyone experienced or new to IFS.

In IFS, we ask the question: where do you find the part in or around your body? Susan McConnell’s book, Somatic IFS, details multiple paths to integrate the body into psychotherapy and healing in the IFS paradigm.

Somatic IFS is a comprehensive framework with insights for both therapists and clients. It incorporates the natural world (water, air, earth, fire) and contemporary science (biology, chemistry, physics, neuroscience). With realistic clinical examples, Susan details a way of being/listening/presencing clients to “hear” both the conscious narrative and the body story. The embodied Somatic IFS therapist employs one’s whole being as an assistant in healing. Somatic IFS invites healers to examine and expand the therapeutic use of one’s Self.

Additionally, Susan courageously invites the field to reconsider the role of ethical physical touch in healing.
This book is an important addition to the emerging body of literature on Internal Family Systems.
