Rich in clinical examples, this book offers a fresh perspective on the roles of shame and guilt in psychological distress and presents a step-by-step framework for treatment. Martha Sweezy explains how the principles of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy are ideally suited to helping trauma survivors and other clients who struggle with debilitating shame to understand and heal psychic parts wounded in childhood. Annotated case illustrations show and explain IFS techniques in action. Other useful features include boxed therapeutic exercises, decision trees, and pointers to help therapists avoid or overcome common pitfalls.

Clearly written with clarifying examples to amplify the observations, this offering from Martha Sweezy is an invaluable addition to the IFS libraries of clients and clinicians alike. The readable text lays out important constellation structures that arise in the psyche when parts are burdened by shame.
I cannot recommend it highly enough. This is an incredible resource for IFS healing and healers.

This is one of my favourite IFS books. It engages what can be a challenging topic in a way that drew me in and made a lot of sense. It has many examples and case studies and encapsulates what is at the essence of so much of our lives and our therapeutic work by giving helpful perspectives and framing of how we can explore it. A great one to read and reread, and revisit the exercises. Highly recommend.

Martha Sweezy is *such* a beautiful writer. Crisp, clear, illustrative. Perfect. I am in consultation for IFS certification right now, and reading this is like having extra consultation sessions from a master trainer. I have been trained in IFS for a good six to eight years at this point and this text is deepening my practice exponentially. She gives lots of clinical examples and language for how to speak with parts that make sense. The explanations for how parts behave and their motivations for their behavior really land. There is a wide range of client demographics and presenting problems. This is a classic text, and all therapists can benefit from more study of shame and guilt. Thank you for this treat!

We all have shame, and many layers no matter your background. Martha Sweezy breaks it down, all the flavors of how it shows up in our internal worlds, in relationships and in the therapy room. This is an invaluable book for therapists, especially those using the IFS model. It teaches us how shame shows up in language, our ways of bonding, attaching and disconnecting and interacting in the world around us. She weaves in case vignettes to illustrate concepts. The book addresses how therapists can help clients to understand and appreciate their inner landscape, get ‘unstuck’ and move toward greater self- compassion. Highly recommend it!

This is a great book, and not just because shame and guilt lie at the heart of so much suffering. Martha Sweezy does a wonderful job of laying out the causes, consequences, and overt and covert manifestations of shame and guilt, which on its own would make a significant contribution to the IFS literature. While doing this, however, she also addresses a common concern of newly trained IFS therapists, who sometimes find its protocols rote and scripted, even to the point that they give up practicing IFS altogether. The many clinical dialogues that Martha Sweezy presents bring IFS therapy to life, showing how a skilled clinician working within the model can remain fluid, spontaneous, and truly connected. This book will be a classic.

This book is extremely well written and superbly structured (as an ex-consultant, that’s a compliment I don’t give out easily). Even the “intro to IFS” section—every IFS book seems to have one, which is great as a way to see how different people explain the model, but often tedious to get through—is more informative and succinct than the other ones I’ve read. The book provides a super simple and consistent framework for guilt & shame and illustrates EVERYTHING with a laser-focused (but clearly real) client example. I highly recommend this book for any practitioner.

This book is a real gift. There are sections that are like listening to Martha Sweezy’s voice. It is very rich and abundant in details. Also, the dialogs with clients are very didactical and illustrative on IFS nuances and can easily be adapted to other modalities. For example the thoroughness and detail in the wording of therapist’s questions for as simple as they are. It is beautiful and very useful). It is definitely a must have for any person interested on these two important topics.

I've mostly felt that IFS work needed to be witnessed or experienced to be appreciated, and that's still really important. But Martha Sweezy's book offers practitioners an almost encyclopedic, clear, comprehensible, example-filled guide to working with clients, their selves and all their many parts. I particularly appreciate her central focus on shame and guilt. Other often valuable therapies tend not to distinguish them so clearly, nor to address shame adequately - a huge omission. Brava! This book is a very informative read, but even better, it's the kind of reference book you can return to repeatedly as you do the work.

I am relatively new to IFS and found this book to be well-worth $35.56. Concepts are presented in a methodical manner in which each builds upon the context of the previous. Of particular value are the numerous case scenarios of client/therapist dialogue that are not unnecessarily long. They are just long enough to illustrate the point. Several scenarios are grouped to reveal nuance in application. For me, it was the right amount of reinforcement without redundancy. As I worked through the book, a therapeutic style emerged that felt natural and not contrived. Reading this book was a wise investment of my time.
