In this treatment manual, Adele Lafrance, Katherine A. Henderson, and Shari Mayman provide mental health professionals with guidelines for implementing emotion-focused family therapy (EFFT), an exciting new intervention in which caregivers are the primary healing agents in their loved one’s treatment.

EFFT was initially created to treat eating disorders, and then developed into a transdiagnostic approach that can be applied to any emotion- or behavior-based disorder with various relationship dynamics across the lifespan, including parent–child relationships (even if the child is an adult) and romantic partnerships. The authors describe how to teach caregivers advanced skills for supporting their loved ones through emotion and behavior coaching. Therapists will also learn collaborative strategies for strengthening healing bonds between the caregiver and the loved one and healing relational ruptures.

Techniques for processing caregivers’ emotional blocks are also explored, as are methods for clinicians to work through their own blocks via supervision. Vivid case examples illustrate the implementation of EFFT in a wide variety of realistic scenarios. Clinical handouts are included in the appendices, which are also available under clinician and practitioner resources.

I'm a big fan of this book -- I reference it and recommend it often, and use daily in my practice. It was game-changing for my work in eating disorders, and it has proven useful in working with families struggling with so many other conditions as well. I found the emotion coaching and behavior coaching sections extremely useful, and reference often the appendix of scales, tools & cheat sheets. I also love the practical and compassionate approach (including how to work through blocks in both caregivers and in the clinician), and how it honors and supports caregivers to harness the important healing power of parents & family in this work.

I have been in clinical practice as a child/adolescent/family psychologist for over 20 years and EFFT has been a total game-changer in my practice! I started using the EFFT framework a little over 3 years ago and have witnessed more progress and symptom reduction in clients than any other modality I have used. The manual is concise, well-written, easy-to-follow with clinical examples to illustrate the techniques along with enough background information to truly understand the foundational constructs of the model. The manual provides clinicians - from those just beginning to practice to those seasoned clinicians - a tangible approach to incorporate EFFT into any other therapeutic modality they currently work with to increase its effectiveness and impact real change in their clients.

I'm a clinical psychologist practicing in Toronto. I've been exposed to quite a bit of brilliant and helpful treatment models to help facilitate clients' recovery from mental health difficulties. EFFT is a model that helps to HEAL the relationships between carers and their loved ones. It is powerful. In this text, the model is laid out clearly and with the quiet passion and dedication of clinicians who have practiced what they preached. This model has the potential to bring healing to many different kinds of relationships and it has highlighted some of the core strategies and stances that promote transformation. I'm encouraging every clinician to read and read again this most valuable manual.
