From clinical psychologist and expert in narcissistic relationships Dr. Ramani Durvasula, a guide to protecting and healing yourself from the daily harms of narcissism

AN OPEN FIELD PUBLICATION FROM MARIA SHRIVER

It’s not always easy to tell when you’re dealing with a narcissistic person. One day they draw you in with their charm and charisma, the next they gaslight you, wreck your self-esteem, and leave you wondering, What should I have done differently? As Dr. Ramani explains in It’s Not You, the answer is: absolutely nothing.

Just as a tiger can’t change its stripes, a narcissist will not stop manipulating and invalidating you, no matter how much you try to appease them. The first step toward healing from their toxic influence—and to protect yourself from future harm—is to accept that you are not to blame for their behavior.

Drawing on more than two decades of studying the landscape of narcissism and working with survivors, Dr. Ramani explores how narcissists hijack our well-being and offers a healing path forward. Unpacking the oft-misunderstood personality, she reveals the telltale behavioral patterns that indicate you may be dealing with a narcissist. Along the way, you’ll learn how to become gaslight resistant, chip away at the trauma bonds that keep you stuck in the cycle, grieve the loss of these painful relationships, create and maintain realistic boundaries, discern unhelpful behaviors from narcissistic behaviors, and recover your sense of self after constant invalidation.

Thriving after, or even during, a narcissistic relationship can be challenging, but It’s Not You shows you it is possible. Dr. Ramani invites you to stop blaming yourself and trying to change the narcissistic person, and to start giving yourself permission to let go of their hold on you and finally embrace your true self.

Dr Ramani does a great job in describing narcissitis personality styles in all its flavors. She also offers a useful roadmap both in terms of identifying such personality styles as well as how to deal with them. The main drawback is that she never encourages the reader to look for any narcissism in themselves. The reader is given a blank check to project narcissism as something exclusively out there. Paradoxically, this can encourage victimhood and entitlement and the very curelty and lack of self insight that she mostly does a great job in combatting.

Dr. Ramani has written an outstanding book. It's not loaded with tech talk. She uses straightforward and can understand her. She talks about what narcissists do but most of all tell how this abuse has effected the survivors. Other book I've got on this subject doesn't directly say how the victors get hurt and how to overcome it. Dr. Ramani is compassionate in helping survivors.

Dr Ramani has captured all the information in one spot for me to review. Her excellent guidance in navigating healing from narcissistic abuse these last 3 years has brought me to a healthy and whole place. Today, the 38th person said, "Your face seems different." (I started counting at "9".) I still don't know what they mean, but I do know my heart and soul are thawing and the vibrant woman I used to be is slowly emerging.

This is a "must read" for most people because most people encounter (have encountered) friends, significant others, parents, children, or siblings (or other family members) with narcissistic traits that impact the quality of their life. This book gives you hope - because it clearly articulates strategies to identify naricissistic traits and to manage those people (whether it is to go "no contact" or stay). No one is above this ever-growing insidious issue, especially in our western culture emphasizing individualism and societal divisive trends.

I bought this book for my daughter who was destroyed emotionally, mentally and physically by a narcissist. I’m hoping this book will shed some light for my daughter and my own experiences.

The author has a personal and empathetic approach to what narcissisme is, how it dammages relationships and how to heal from it narcisstic abuse. It's both systematic and engaging all the way; so well written that it's hard to put down the book.

I also highly recommend Dr Ramanis online program for healing your wounds and develope your inner strength after dammaging experiences with narcissisme. It's so helpful and systematic that I think it will change the psychology field. And it's hard to find a more empathetic and dedicated therapist.

I've been researching narcissism through multiple youtube influencers as I try to heal and recover for several years now. I'm currently only at the beginning of this book, and Dr. Ramani is already saying stuff no one else has addressed. I had to force myself to stop reading and go to sleep at 2 am, and it was really hard to close the book! Each paragraph felt more empowering and gave me more clarity. I'm so excited to read more. I admire Dr. Ramani so much and I felt her kindness and support through her words. I'm so grateful she wrote this book.

We can lose our sense of self care and even become suicidal. Dr Ramani does an excellent job detailing the dynamics of narcissist abuse and how to determine if you are indeed in a narcissistic abusive relationship. Most of us experience more than one. Her book is groundbreaking! It's absolutely essential that we take the focus off of them and stop taking the blame for their maladaptive personality. This book covers healing from different types of narcissistic abuse: family of origin, work, friends. And it is golden with so many different examples for each category, which was eye opening for me, specially the section of the different family roles. I have never seen a portion in a book describe me so thoroughly that it provided a strong sense of “aha!” now it all makes sense.

Anyway, I highly recommend the book; it is a wonderful healing tool to add to your self healing kit!
