Though our understanding of autism has greatly expanded, many autistic individuals are still missed or misdiagnosed. This highly accessible book clarifies many ways that autism can present, particularly in people who camouflage to hide their autistic traits.

The authors take the reader step by step through the diagnostic criteria, incorporating the latest research as well as quotes from over 100 autistic contributors that bring that research to life. They also describe many aspects of autism that are not included in the current diagnostic criteria, such as autistic strengths and co-occurring disorders. Readers will learn about highly relevant topics, such as different types of empathy, sensory systems that are not well known, neuro-crash and burn out, and relative versus absolute thinking.

This book provides a deep, current, and neurodiversity-affirmative understanding of the less obvious presentations of autism. It is relevant to all healthcare professionals, educators, family members, autistic individuals, and anyone who is curious about autism. A clinical companion guide, Is This Autism? A Companion Guide for Diagnosing, is available for clinicians who make mental health diagnoses.

I have done a lot of reading and research on autism, and this is definitely one of my favorite books on the subject. It's an incredible exploration of what autism can look like in those who may fly under the radar or have been missed in childhood. It breaks down the DSM-5 criteria into easy-to-understand and nuanced descriptions, as well as including numerous first-hand accounts from autistic folks of multiple backgrounds. I personally used this as a guide for taking notes in order to prepare for my own adult autism assessment and found it extremely helpful.

I have a newly diagnosed 14 yr old and this helped me and my husband understand what the doctors were saying. We had the explanation from the psychologist at the time of diagnosis, but it helped quite a bit to have all the areas systematically laid out with examples that we could understand so that we both can see what our daughter presents with and other areas where she isn't showing autistic traits but other kids might. Also, reading and re-reading gave us time to process things and then check back that you don't have when you are speaking with professionals in a timed session.

It's also been great to share this book with educators and others that also don't know much about autism that is less obviously affecting speech and motor skills. We are constantly explaining what considerations we need and why, and I recommend this book at least once a week.

At last, a science-based explanation of subtle-presentation and high function autism that includes PSS (Pathological Demand Avoidance). This book is sorely needed by parents, teachers, and clinicians. Much suffering could be avoided in families who support these kids given the crisis of affordability and access to treatment and diagnoses of ASD in this country.
The authors address social stigma (which could be a whole book on its on), cultural specificity and sensitivity in treatment, and include the voices of people on the spectrum. A huge achievement while there is still much work to be done. This book is timely and necessary.
    Educators and clinicians take heed.

When I purchased this book, I wasn't sure how neurodiversity affirming it would be, or if it really would be neurodiversity affirming at all. I have not finished reading it yet, but so far, it is definitely everything I hoped it would be. It is also helping me understand and shift my thinking as a parent and as a provider of services. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to better understand the neurodiversity movement and/or better understand autistic people in their lives.

I've read dozens of books trying to find answers or explanation for our struggles as a family. After my daughter was finally diagnosed with autism at age 8, the psychologist recommended this book. I didn't want to read yet another self-help or informational book, but I'm so glad I did. If you're looking for validation and simple explanation for what you see in your child's behavior, I couldn't recommend this book more. It's especially geared towards autistic girls, although there is plenty of information about autistic boys too. This book has helped me describe behaviors about my daughter that I have never been able to put into words. It has also helped me ask the right questions of her providers. Worth every penny.

I struggled for 8 years to try to understand how to help my daughter, even though all her teachers assured me she was "fine" since she was such an excellent student. But I knew something was "off" since it shouldn't have been so soul crushing to try to achieve those results academically and socially. I felt like I was brushed off as a "tiger mom" when I persevered in trying to figure out what was wrong. Finally a new neuropyschologist recommended I read this book and it was an AHA moment for me. Finally I understood what my daughter was facing and it was incredibly illuminating. If you feel like there is something wrong, but you can't put your finger on it and everyone tells you that you are making a fuss about nothing, then please read this book. Especially if you have a high achieving daughter like I do.

This book is an amazing resource on the less obvious presentations of autism. As an educator and a parent, I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has an autistic individual in their lives.
It is incredibly thoughtful and well written with so much sensitivity and careful consideration going into each section. Truly inclusive and compassionate! I appreciated the organization of information as well as the writing style. This is not a dry textbook type of book! The experiences of autistic individuals generously sprinkled throughout the book brought the diagnostic criteria, co-occuring conditions, and autistic strengths information to life genuinely and respectfully. I love how neurodiversity affirming this book is and how the authors truly support #nothingaboutuswithoutus. A must read!!!

The book, Is This Autism? really delves into autism in a way that is both highly researched and easily readable. The anecdotes from autistic individuals bring autism to light in a real and relatable way.

As both a professional (educational consultant) working with autistic children and teens and a family member of an autistic person, reading this book has been highly valuable to me in understanding the autistic experience better, and as a result, helped me develop greater empathy for those with autism navigating a highly complex world not designed for their neurotype. It has influenced my work with clients and my interactions with both my autistic students and family member.

I highly recommend this seminal book to anyone (professional or lay person/family member) interested in learning more about the nuances of autism.

After struggling for 14 years to find the right diagnosis, approach, and support for our son, we are finally on the right track, thanks to the three amazing women who wrote this book. Our son had gone through two rounds of full Neuropsychological evaluations (plus countless other tests) before a clinician even mentioned the possibility of Autism. Having read this book, I have a much better understanding of why that is, but more importantly, I understand that anyone working with children NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK! If any of our son's teachers, therapists, paraeducators, coaches, OTs, Doctors, etc., had done so, who knows what a different trajectory we'd be on. As it is, we are trying to dig out from years of trauma and hardened distrust from a teen who has been misunderstood his whole life. This book is also incredibly well written and organized, without intimidating jargon or psycho-babble. Please, if you work with children in any capacity, read it and pass it on. As the percentage of children born with ASD is increasing every year, it is becoming imperative that the neurotypical world work harder to understand who they are rather than continue to ignore or "fix" them.

Diagnosing is a large part of my job as a Clinical Psychologist. I had heard an excellent podcast with Donna Henderson about less common presentations of autism, particularly in girls and women on "The Testing Psychologist" podcast. I knew I would want to read her more in-depth discussion of autism.

This book was highly detailed and backed by research, as well as the voices of Autistic individuals. I very much enjoyed the in-depth discussion of each of the diagnostic criteria of autism and how this might present in more subtle and/or less stereotypical presentations. The authors do a great job of explaining the neurodiversity paradigm, that autism is not a "genetic mistake" but rather "a natural form of human variation." While exploring more subtle presentations, the authors are also cautious, such as stating that a clear pattern of inflexibility should be required to meet criteria, not just one or two examples.

Some favorite quotations: "The purpose of diagnosis is to understand and to help."
"In our opinion, the most powerful benefit of proper diagnosis of autism is non-judgmental self-understanding."
"It's important to ask the person about their internal experiences rather than relying solely on external presentation."

Our oldest has a recent autism diagnosis. While there were a few things over the years that may have made her quirky, I never thought she was on the spectrum. Thanks to books and insight like this, her clinician did. And after a more comprehensive analysis and later me reading this cover to cover at the beach I have a much greater understanding for, appreciation of and empathy for what autism may really mean and how much work it takes for her to blend in and have not been flagged earlier. I so appreciate the comprehensive work here. And the first person perspectives of so many autistics. Some of this book scared the crud out of me. And some of it made me cry. And some of it was incredibly empowering and insightful. Like I finally got my kid. I have already recommended it several times.

If you are even a little curious/wondering "should I read this book?" Then the answer is almost surely yes, yes you should. Are you in your 30s or 40s and feel like you've never quite figured out what everyone else seems to get? Like you never quite fit in? Maybe you're a practitioner whose client fits that bill? Autistic person struggling with imposter syndrome? Parent of an autistic child? Teacher?
Newly diagnosed? Adult looking for an autism book that's not just about kids? If you have any, even a tangential reason to look into or think about autism, then read this book. Why? Because it's full of examples, ideas, and other real stories from dozens of autistic people, wrapped up in an important deep-dive into the clinical definitions of autism and some practical, often misunderstood or missed, expressions of those definitions. Reading this was the first time I've ever read a 'textbook' and felt validated.

I appreciate that the authors really get it, have really listened, and are spreading what they've learned in such an accessible way. I think this book is going to enlighten and inform diagnosticians in a way that helps lots of people find answers they've spent a long time looking for.
