Help autistic kids understand their unique gifts and needs and learn strategies for daily living in a neurotypical world.

This positive, straightforward reference book offers kids with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) their own comprehensive resource for both understanding their condition and finding tools to cope with the challenges they face every day. Freshly updated, the content reflects changes in the understanding of ASD since the book was first released, including clarification that Asperger’s syndrome is no longer a specific diagnosis and what this means for readers. The book also features new stories of young people with autism and an added chapter, “Tech Talk.”

Some children with ASD are gifted; others struggle academically. Some are more introverted, while others want to be social. Some get “stuck” on things, have intense interests, or experience repeated motor movements like flapping or pacing (“stims”). The Survival Guide for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder covers all of these areas, with an emphasis on helping children gain new self-understanding and self-acceptance.

Meant to be read with a parent, the book addresses questions (“What is ASD?” “Why me?”) and provides strategies for communicating, staying safe and smart online, making and keeping friends, and succeeding in school. Body and brain basics highlight symptom management, exercise, diet, hygiene, relaxation, sleep, and toileting. Emphasis is placed on helping kids handle intense emotions and behaviors and get support from family and their team of helpers when needed. The book includes stories from real kids, fact boxes, helpful checklists, and resources. Sections for parents offer additional information.

My husband & my boy girl twins are all on the spectrum. It has been a huge learning experience for me to navigate relationships with each of them as they are all unique in their traits. This book is like the holy grail of books for kids and parents in helping them to understand what it means to be on the spectrum and giving a clear way to navigate through life in a way that helps them to feel confiedent about who they are. My hubby and I are reading it to our children each night individually (since twins love to compete for attention). Our whole family is getting so much out of this book. Thank you to the authors for writing this! It is exceptional!!

I found this book to be incredibly useful at explaining some basics of ASD that my 15 yr old daughter, her sisters and us parents found super useful. It was a positive read for my daughter who kept saying: “yes that’s me!” And then could take some of the advice and find it very applicable. It’s a long book and maybe not at a reading level for younger kiddos depending on maturity and reading level. My girl was diagnosed very late and so this has been very educational for us! Thank you!!

We've been reading this book chapter by chapter as a family. We discuss things as we go, ask questions of each other, and discuss things we observe in our son (age 11). He's really come a long way in the last month or so since our purchase. The authors do a great job of explaining ASD on his level and keeping him in a place of self - reflection. I'm very grateful for this purchase. It's helped us all really.

My daughter is 9 and I debated on how to tell her about her autism. At first, it didn't go well even though I really thought out how to address it and talked about it in a positive way. I decided to order this book and it has helped so much! It gives real examples of why autism is amazing and directly connects with her in a way that I was wishing to do myself! Now I feel we can share and enjoy wonderful things about her and can work on things we need to without feeling the strain or stress of a label. I highly recommend this book!

Every family should read this even if no one is one the spectrum. Extremely well-written by two moms/ doctors both with ASD sons, who've worked with lots of spectrum kids. Contains so many true stories and solutions that it helps every reader to understand ASD. Now that diagnosis is more common, everyone knows someone with autism so read this book especially if you are a guidance counselor, teacher, school administrator, parent of kid who knows ASD kids. And this is an easy, colorful read with cool drawings and side notes so its fun to flip through after reading, you'll remember the stories told by kids dealing with spectrum. This is upbeat and positive, own it and enjoy!

So easy to read and understand. Finally something that all the family could read and really take something away from it. I have recommended this book several times and I am so pleased to have purchased it. As a Mom of a 10 year old boy with autism with violence tendencies this is a wonderful reference and a great book to give family members so that they may start to understand more of what it's like for these kids. They are not this way intentionally and they need all the help and understanding we can give them!

I know this book is mostly geared toward the child with autism but as a mother just starting on this "path" I thought it would be a great way to get introduced with autism from the point of view of the person who has it. It's written in sections with colourful paragraph titles and illustrations - just the way I like my non-ficiton books (otherwise I get overwhelmed by page after page of bland information!).

So far, for where we - as parents - are in this process, this book has been perfect. Someday, our son can read it himself and get a better understanding about how his mind works a little differently than most people. I feel like this book has taken a lot of the drama out of the situation, explaining things in simple terms and providing suggestions for working through various challenges.

My son is an 8 yr old with ASD. He is high functioning and reads very well. This book has helped in so many ways. First it has helped us to all 'get over' the whole idea of being diagnosed. That is a biggie for me, even though it might not be so much for him. It gives tangible ideas and examples that helps the child *see* the issues they might be experiencing. At the same time it does a really good job of explaining that not ALL people have the same challenges. My son and I are reading this book together and it's helping me to have the conversation with him. It also gives him the opportunity to go over and over the material and absorb it at his own pace.
