The definite account of psychologist Jean Piaget’s work

Jean Piaget’s influence on psychology has been profound. His pathbreaking investigations and theories of cognitive development have set child psychology moving in entirely new directions. His bold speculations have provided the inspiration for the work of others. His studies have been the subject of many books and countless articles. And, significantly, his influence has spread to other disciplines and is having an ever-growing impact on the general culture at large.

Here Jean Piaget, with the assistance of his long-time collaborator Bäel Inhelder, offers a definitive presentation of the developmental psychology he has elaborated over the last forty years. This comprehensive synthesis traces each stage of the child’s cognitive development, over the entire period of childhood, from infancy to adolescence.

Piaget isn't interested in children per se, but rather intelligence. Observing intelligence at different stages of development provides insight into what intelligence actually entails and how it functions. As someone who studies cognitive psychology, Piaget provides one of the most concrete and comprehensive descriptions of intelligence that I've found in the literature.

I highly recommend this book as an introduction, although I'll say it is just an introduction, and many of the ideas he discusses here cannot be fully understood without further reading.

This is one of around twenty books by Piaget about various aspects of child develop. It is the preeminent example of good science and the founding evidence for our understanding of how children learn language and learn about their physical, social and cultural world. It is a must read still today for anyone working in the area of child language, child learning, children's intelligence or children's deficits.
