You live in a world that wasn’t designed for you. A world where you’re expected to sit still, stay quiet, and focus. Because of the way your brain is wired, you can feel like you’re failing at life. But you are not failing. You are awesome.

Award-winning content creators Kim and Penn Holderness are on a mission to reboot how we think about the unfortunately named “attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.” As always, they are doing it by looking in the mirror, because they don’t just study ADHD; they live it.

Penn was in college when he was diagnosed with ADHD, although the signs of having a brain that worked just a little bit differently had been there since he was a kid. Rather than view the diagnosis as a curse or give in to feelings of inadequacy or failure, he took a different approach, one that he wants to share with fellow ADHDers and the people who care about them.

Drawing on their often-hilarious insights and the expertise of doctors, researchers, and specialists; Kim and Penn provide fun, easy-to-digest advice and explanations, including:

  • What it’s actually like to live with an ADHD brain.
  • How to find humor in the pitfalls, sob stories, and unbelievable triumphs (like the time they won The Amazing Race!) that come with ADHD.
  • How to tackle the challenges ADHD presents with a positive outlook.
  • Targeted tools and techniques to play to your unique strengths.
  • Fun extras like ADHD Bingo, an ode to cargo pants, and what the world would look like if ADHDers were in charge.

Take it from Penn: Having ADHD can be scary, but it comes with incredible upsides, including creativity, hyperfocus, and energy. You might even say it’s kind of awesome. Whether you have ADHD or want to support someone else in their journey, this is the guide you need to make the life you want.

I purchased this book for my ADHD tween daughter since she loves the Holderness Family YouTube channel. I had no idea how much of an impact this would have on our entire family. It has helped me understand my daughter's brain and motivations, and has given us so much to talk about together.

Since it has become her favorite book, she decided to write a book report about it for her English class. I found her staying up past bedtime in her room writing a detailed outline for her essay (on her own volition) and she was SO excited to share this book with her teacher. She is also now a fan of cargo pants ("purse pants").

Thank you for giving a voice to my daughter and empowering her to harness her energy, creativity, and hyperfocus for good!

I am a mom with ADHD parenting a 16-year-old son with ADHD. While I understand how it feels to struggle with it, this book helped me see things from a male standpoint and how it looks different for me than it does for him. My son is also reading it and finished half the book in one sitting (go hyperfocus!) and has been able to verbalize things he never could before. I can tell the lightbulbs are going off and he is able to say out loud what was stuck in his head before and just wondered why he couldn't do things the way others can. I think it is giving him a boost of hope!

This book has helped us see that while there are daily struggles for the both of us, we also can do some pretty great stuff. Thank you so much, Penn, Kim, and medical staff for making this book so transparent, human, helpful, and engaging.

P.S. Penn, now we play Duotrigordle daily together thanks to the mention in the book, and I now know what hook and loop is. :)

This is a practical, real world perspective on ADHD. It’s funny and relatable. It offers practical tips and approaches. Every person with adhd and everyone who knows someone with adhd should read this book. They acknowledge the struggles of having adhd, the patience required to have a close relationship with someone with adhd, but they also highlight the super power it can be and incredible contributions made by those with adhd. They humanize adhd and open your eyes to how the person with adhd feels. Excellent read!!!!

Penn & Kim have nailed this book. It is designed with ADHDers centered and celebrated. The format makes it easy to read and numerous as you check out and back into paying attention. Supported by several know researchers in ADHD, this book is a must have for all families and friends living this chaotically awesome neurodiverse life.
I am adding this to my class on special education for future and current teachers.

As a mom of a kiddo with SEVERE ADHD, someone who likely has had it my whole life, and a pediatric OT who has treated kiddos with this diagnosis for the last 18 years, I needed this...and I hope I can get my 17-year-old to read it. I have only only read the Foreword, intro (both of which I always end up skipping in every book I read...not for lack of trying) and chapter 1. It is amazing so far. I have a tendency to have to reread thing frequently because my brain will wander and so far have not had to do it once. I bought this book because the frustration of helping manage my son's ADHD,is destroying our relationship and I needed to detoxify myself from the negative cycle of nagging, WTFs, and disappointment which I know is having a detrimental effect on his self-esteem. I feel every aspect of awesome when I look ay him each day, even though I know he believes it is only the negatives. It's only the beginning but it has given me great hope for him and for my ability to stop the negative feedback cycle we are in. Thank you for writing this! I haven't even finished, but will be forever grateful for your letter to loved ones Penn. That was absolutely heart piercing...in the very best way!

I was so excited for this book to arrive! My 15-year-old has ADHD and has quickly tossed any book I've tried to give him about ADHD in the past under the bed or in some other black hole. The one show our whole family will sit down to watch is The Amazing Race so I was hoping that Penn and Kim being the authors might just be the hook he needed. I was geeking out a little when it arrived but tried to play it cool, " Hey look, the book that the parents that won The Amazing Race wrote about ADHD was released!" [Cooly slides book down the counter while teen pretends to be unimpressed.] Fast forward thirty minutes later and what do I come across but said unimpressed 15-yo racing through this book (and often with a smile on his face)!! He's quite a good chunk in and his review is glowing! It even led to some good discussions over dinner tonight. Thank you thank you thank you for addressing ADHD in a way he finds interesting and entertaining! (And I can't wait to get a turn with it and hopefully find out more hacks/ways to support him--thanks again!)
