Deliberate practice exercises allow students and trainees to rehearse systemic family therapy (SFT) skills to develop basic competence and hone their own personal therapeutic style.

In these exercises, two or more trainees role-play couples or family therapy sessions with one trainee acting as the therapist and the others acting as clients, rotating through these roles under a supervisor’s guidance. The trainee playing the therapist improvises appropriate and authentic responses to client statements organized into three difficulty levels—beginner, intermediate, and advanced—that reflect common problems and concerns encountered by SFT practitioners.

The first 12 exercises each focus on a single skill, such as building a therapeutic alliance, deescalating conflicts, establishing rules and boundaries, and addressing diversity issues. These are followed by two comprehensive exercises—an annotated transcript and free-form mock therapy sessions—in which trainees integrate these essential skills into a single SFT session.

Step-by-step instructions guide participants through the exercises, identify criteria for mastering each skill, and explain how to monitor and adjust difficulty. Guidelines to help trainers and trainees get the most out of training are also provided.

I teach an online “beginning” helping relationship course for undergraduate students. I have seen how going back to basic skills and teaching these skills have helped me to enhance these skills personally as an clinician and remind me of such important skills that I haven’t thought of in a while. Ive practiced a lot of the exercises from this book, and I’m excited to continue to practice them and continue to enhance my confidence and skills like I’ve been able to do in teaching my course. Worth it.

As an emerging therapist (MFT), I have begun working with clients in my second semester. As a cohort, we complete one principle from the deliberate practice manual weekly. Setting aside time to practice has increased my skill set for using the criterium for each lesson to ensure I am building critical micro-skills like providing a systemic rationale, building a therapeutic alliance, and reframing, for example. Each lesson is easy to comprehend and practice. There are three different levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. There are also examples of scripts in case you need them as you are uncertain how best to phrase any situation. I appreciate the improvement and confidence that completing the exercises provided me. Having practiced multiple times, different exercises have provided me with muscle memory that takes over when I am in session with a client, and I know how I want to communicate with the client effectively. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn or improve their micro-skills. This manual is a high-value resource that I highly recommend incorporating into improving your skill set and practice.

I'm currently a Marriage and Family Therapy student, and have absolutely LOVED implementing these deliberate practice exercises into my studies. The book works on improving key skills such as: de-escalation, de-triangulating, engendering hope, as well as many others. Each practice takes only a few minutes and allows you to become more comfortable during these situations. Even though I am new, I could see this also being a resource for more seasoned therapists who want to brush up on some skills. I definitely recommend it!
