This is the best book I've seen on the topic, and looks at the only modality I'd want to use in couples work. EFT focuses on attachment and narrows down the focus to particular patterns. By meeting the attachment needs to create safety in the relationship, people start to heal. Reading this book made me think all trauma work should include the client's significant other if possible.

I love Dr. Sue Johnson's works on couples therapy and attachment theory. As someone with Aspergers, I find it extremely useful to learn about relationships and emotion from the systems theory perspective and am constantly observing Sue's claims in real life. Taking a non-pathologizing approach to trauma and associated defense mechanisms allows the therapist to offer a secure base to clients that they are unlikely to find elsewhere. This is especially true given that trauma often spills into their core relationships, and partners generally don't understand the nature of PTSD. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about the nature of trauma or therapists looking into EFT.

I am loving Sue Johnson's book! I am a beginning therapist working my practicum with survivors of trauma of many kinds. Although this is a couples' therapy book, I am finding that many of the principles it contains are applicable to individuals and families. If anyone who has a Rogerian philosophy is interested in Emotionally Focused Therapy, and wants to work with traumatized people, this is the book to read.

The book details the ways in which those suffering from truama symptoms i.e. PTSD are effected in thier closests relationships, particularly marriage. It gives many real examples of couples and walks a couples therapist through the details of a relationship where trauma and relational distress intersect in a close relayionship ...using and applying attachment theory as a guide to healthy adult relationships. I highly recommend it.
While written by a teaching professor for therapists, the reading level is popular with minimal technical language.

Though an 'academic' type book... Susan M Johnson hits the nail on the head for reaction of Survivors.. It is a book set up for other therapists. It was nice for me to read some of the studies that are sited in this book and to have my husband and his logical mind read as well. He has had a very difficult time since my 'box' blew up and this book showed him that it isn't 'just me'. I did not buy this book for answers for 'me', necessarily, yet had relief that i can see us in it and that gives me a bit of hope..... Thank you

Understand the impact of trauma from an attachment perspective and learn how to effectively help your trauma clients heal. I have found this book extremely beneficial in my work with trauma clients. Clearly understanding trauma and the attachment significance helps me keep my balance when the trauma comes up in the session. It also provides a map of what healing looks like, so I know how to help them.

Dr. Johnson looks for resources for effectively helping war trauma survivors. Her language is more than adequate professionally but doesn't get in the way of easily understanding what she is saying and where she is taking us. Her illustrations are earthy, practical and fun, all the while dealing with material that challenges the best of us as therapists. When we wake up in the night in cold sweats, the therapist isn't there. However my spouse is!

Great resource for those working with immigrants with war trauma previously factored into their equation.

Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy with Trauma Survivors: Strengthening Attachment Bonds provides a rich resource for MFTs. First, Johnson argues for the necessity of placing relationship treatment in what is often thought of as an "individual" form of psychopathology. Second, she clearly delineated the differences between the standard approach to EFT and modifications for addressing trauma with EFT. Her inclusion of several case studies has been helpful for understanding the application of EFT with different kinds of trauma. Finally, her text is replete with systems thinking that I find invaluable as both a marriage and family therapist and a professor.
