“Anyone who works with troubled children and their families should not miss this book. Healing the Fractured Child weaves together comprehensive theory and neurobiology that substantiate practical treatment guidelines for children and their families. The complexity of symptoms, diagnoses, assessment, use of medication, and a variety of innovative treatment approaches for stabilization, trauma processing and integration are explored and come to life through the clear, practical and touching clinical illustrations peppered throughout the book. Fran Waters has drawn on her vast clinical experience and thorough knowledge of current perspectives on dissociation and child therapy to write an integrative, readable, and immensely useful masterpiece, a gift to the field of child psychology and psychotherapy and to the many therapists, children and parents who will benefit from her wisdom.” –Pat Ogden PhD, Founder, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute; Author, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Interventions for Trauma and Attachment “A skillfully written, comprehensive and remarkable volume. Well-grounded in theory and full of rich, practical applications and detailed case examples. Water’s outstanding work will expand clinicians’ capacity to understand and assess dissociation as well as to effectively accompany children in their healing journeys. An essential resource for therapists of all orientations working with trauma and dissociation.” Ana M. GÛmez, MC, LPC, Author of EMDR Therapy and Adjunct Approaches with Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment and Dissociation “Healing the Fractured Child” provides an invaluable source of information for all professionals and non-professionals interested in childhood dissociation. Based on her many years of experience in this field, Waters takes us from an explanation of dissociation and related theories to the behaviors which may be noticed by a parent, teacher or doctor, through the assessment quagmire and the challenges of parenting, to the important work of emotional regulation and the identification of self-states, bringing in consideration of where medication can or cannot assist and describing the hard work of trauma processing, to integration, possible relapse, and back again to even stronger internal integration. The intricately described clinical examples provide a plethora of ideas for working with these children and offer readers the encouragement and hope so important for working with children who experienced trauma. Sandra Wieland, Ph.D., R.Psych. Illuminates the most promising treatments available for dissociative children Written by one of the nation’s leading practitioners in the field of childhood trauma, abuse, and dissociation, this comprehensive resource fills a void in the literature to provide in-depth knowledge of current interventions for treating dissociation in youth. It describes a detailed, careful assessment process and creative, evidence-supported techniques for helping children and their families to heal from chaotic, traumatizing experiences. With both a theoretical and practical focus, the book offers proven strategies for successfully treating children and adolescents with varying degrees of dissociation and co-morbid symptoms. It also integrates adjunct therapies in environments beyond those of traditional psychotherapy, such as school, and describes how their strategies can be used effectively to augment therapy and understand dissociative children. Based on a model integrating five prominent therapeutic modalities, and underscoring the importance of attachment style, the book focuses on the neurobiology of trauma, a high co-morbidity of symptoms, specialized clinical interventions, psychopharmacology, and family intervention techniques. Also addressed are adjunct therapies in art, and EMDR. In addition, the book provides a window into the effects of traumatic events such as medical illness that may be overlooked, and safe techniques with dissociative youth who…

I am not a physician or clinician but a concerned grandparent and child advocate in our school system. I was able to learn about conditions children may have that may be difficult to understand. It helped me to understand how to better communicate with children in general when I don't have any knowledge of their situation.
This is a book that would benefit all child social workers or physicians.

As a pediatrician who has cared for children with DID, I strongly recommend this book to therapists or physicians working with children with DID and/or trauma histories. It offers a wealth of very well researched information as well as many very specific ideas and suggestions that can be integrated into a treatment plan. The personal stories included of clients in whom these strategies have been successful are also very helpful. I believe it would also be useful for parents, both to improve understanding of the condition as well as to offer ideas for strategies that can be employed at home. Parents who have been at a loss for what to do will quickly feel, “I can do that!” The author's grasp of the topic, commitment to research and education, as well as her compassion for the people she works with all are clearly evidenced in this book. She also has managed to present a rather complicated topic in a very readable format, accessible to lay people and therapists alike. Maybe most importantly, this is a very hopeful book for families who often are feeling very discouraged.

It wasn't easy getting through Healing the Fracture Child by Fran Waters. Her writing is excellent and clear, but the material can be troubling. Every time I saw aspects of myself or one of my children in the case studies, I had to take a break, then go back and read several times.

The book suggests that many mental illnesses are misdiagnosed and are really symptoms of dissociation, which itself is of mechanism of coping with trauma. The examples are all children but the material is equally applicable to adults.

While probably most useful for clinicians, the book is valuable for mothers like me who are trying to understand our children's challenges. Dr. Waters is extremely convincing in her suggestion that many symptoms of mental illness may be triggered by trauma. Her definition of trauma is expansive, and I'm sure nearly everyone who works with children or adults would find the book useful in developing a trauma-informed approach, no matter what their specialty.

Again, as a non-clinician, I felt it extremely useful to think about mental illness as a reaction to trauma, a kind of mis-placed energy, rather than as a parasite that needs to be exorcized. This is a more gentle and respectful approach whereby all aspects of a person is recognized and valued and ultimately redirected in a healthful way.

    I recommend this book highly.

This is a must-read book and one to have on hand for clinical practice. I appreciate the integration of theory and research as well as the case studies and examples written throughout the book. This is also a great resource for adoptive parents, like myself, to understand and help children with trauma, especially those with severe maternal deprivation and raised in an orphanage. I've used some of the art therapy ideas to help my child find his voice and communicate his feelings.

Healing the Fractured Child, by Fran S. Waters, is one of the most comprehensive books on assessment, treatment, and supporting parents/teachers, throughout the therapeutic process that I have read. It is difficult to put the book down. Generally, I read a portion of the book during my lunch break, and apply what I have learned in sessions that afternoon! Healing the Fractured Child has expanded my clinical skills, immensely, and continues to fuel my passion for working with children and adolescents, who have Dissociative Disorders. I started a parent support group and highly recommend Healing the Fractured Child to parents. I am extremely grateful for Fran’s extensive clinical expertise and her ability to make the interventions so applicable through her creative authorship, which includes case studies. Thank you, Fran!

I just finished taking a course on child trauma and dissociation with Fran Waters (and others) through the ISSTD. It was one of the best courses that I have taken, taught at a doctoral level of professionalism. Her knowledge of this specialty is deep and long. Classmates who bought this book already have been raving about it and are finding it absorbing reading. I am buying it now based on interacting with her and experiencing her as a compassionate and consummate expert.
