Whenever I tell someone I have ADHD, they invariably say “oh so do I.” “ I can’t remember my best friends name or boyfriend’s birthday or lose track of what I was saying. This is a case of “familiarity breeding disrespect.“this book by Miss McCabe, is not written from an abstract or descriptive point distant of view. It is full of well told stories, often amusing, destrupting, limiting and disorienting this condition can be. She also includes convincing stories of the upside—the “super powers’ —that allow the often amazing advantages and accomplishments that this condition fosters. This is actually due to the incredible attention and hyperactivity the condition can unleashe. ADHD is badly misnamed. The “deficit” lives in the brain’s CONTROL MECANISM, not the attention itself. The brain’s “firmware”’is miswired. We ADHDers need a new motherboard, not different software. It would also be nice better understanding the we are born this way, and not social or moral failures.

    I really liked this book, it had a lot of great information and advice, which I've come to expect from Jessica McCabe. This isn't a boring textbook-like information book, it's written like a friend is talking to you about what they've learned. I highly recommend it to anyone with ADHD or who's loved one has ADHD.

    That said... This book is LONG and there is a LOT of information. Don't give up hope though - the information is broken down into bite-sized chunks and is totally consumable, even with ADHD brain!

    If you or someone you love has ever been diagnosed with ADHD, then you may have wished there was a “How to” guide for ADHD. You get the diagnosis and a prescription and an appointment in a few months to check on side affects, and that’s it! This book is the missing piece for everyone.

    So many people in my life have ADHD, and this book (and YouTube channel) help me understand their condition, challenges and most importantly their benefits! While reading this book, I realized how much of my childhood and adult life were improved by my friends with ADHD.

    I cannot recommend this book enough. You know someone with ADHD, this will improve your life significantly.

    I have loved Jessica’s authenticity watching her videos. The book did not disappoint, she is open and honest about her struggles. She educates without being boring and offers her strategies as well as others’ to help us with our struggles. This book should be mandatory reading for people in the education field to be a real help for students with ADHD.

    I have been following her channel on YouTube for a little while now and she is fantastic! I love the fact that she calls her community "Brains", it cracks me up! I have only started the intro to the book, but I am so excited to start diving into this book! I was diagnosed with ADHD at the end of 2020, Autism in Feb 2023 and if I would have known about these dx's back then and had this book, I guarantee my life would have been so much different! More organized and less emotionally draining, because I would have had the proper tools! Thanks for doing this Jess! You truly are a Godsend <3

    I discovered “How to ADHD” on YouTube right when I had started doing some research on… ADHD! After having learned that my mom had Alzheimer’s I started reading about the disease and how it was related to other conditions. One thing led to the next and I found myself reading articles and watching videos about ADHD for months. I ended up getting a diagnosis and now I take medicine and go to therapy. Throughout this journey, “How to ADHD” has been my most consistent companion and guide. Thanks to Jessica I started learning how to accept myself and learn more everyday about ADHD. The book delivers excellent information, very valuable both scientifically and practically. One of the he major achievements of the book is, though, that Jessica has been able to replicate in writing her warm, friendly, goofy, adorable tone. She is a very good writer who has succeeded at presenting the science in the most accessible manner, and the tools to manage difficulties and challenges clear and direct. It’s a wonderful book for Brains and Hearts. At 53, I could have been bitter for having found out about my ADHD so late in life. Jessica has helped me (and thousands of others) to embrace my neurodivergence with joy and excitement. Absolutely recommended.

    I didn't feel alone. That is the best way I can describe this book. As a mom of an ADHD child, it was a wealth of wisdom. I was able to dig deeper into her mind and to truly understand how it thinks. So often it is isolating being a parent of an ADHD child but this was the opposite. The things that feel so abnormal suddenly aren't . Great Read. Thank you netgalley for the opportunity to read this book.

    I hadn't heard of Jessica McCabe before I bought this book. It was the title of book and the reviews that caught my eye.
    What I found from reading the book is that this is an extremely readable/relatable book.
    There were a lot of moments while reading this book where I realized that things that made me different are not rare. There are people that have the same "issues" and there is a reason why.
    In my age group children were labeled "hyper" etc.. and parents told that you would grow out of it.
    That has not proven true, but the passing of time has also brought more understanding and knowledge of ADHD.
    The main message that runs throughout this book is that different is not "wrong". There are a lot of people that are neurodivergent and that can be a positive thing in more than one respect

    Some of the information that impacted me in a most helpful way are:
    + An excellent definition of executive function and how development is delayed in people with ADHD.
    + Response inhibition. What it is.
    + Chapter 5 " How To Sleep. "
    + Chapter 8 " How To Remember Stuff. "

    This book was edited well and could be beneficial for readers with ADHD, people that suspect that they live with it, and it makes the struggles easier to understand for people that don't have ADHD. It should be at the top of a short list for the subject of ADHD.

    I've been watching Jessica's videos on her YouTube channel for awhile now; which prompted me to get tested and then diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive type). No surprise there. But, what to do?

    I've found her book to be an incredible manual to "how to ADHD". Jessica gives tools, shares her own experiences, background information on ADHD, and even includes peoples' own experiences with it. She write in a very clear way that is easy to read and understand; I found my mind didn't wander too much and when it did I could get right back into it. And I've found aspects of ADHD that I didn't think I was experiencing but was; like the emotional stuff. And so, I've also been able to learn even more and get to know my silly brain even better. My goal is to learn how to work with my ADHD, rather than against it. This book has been extremely helpful in that regard.

    I really can't recommend it enough to both people with ADHD and for those who might know someone with it. Read it now. :)

    I discovered Jessica's YouTube channel maybe a year or so ago, and immediately was hooked. As a woman with ADHD in my late 40s, it has been such a relief to find I'm not the only one who is going through this. I was never diagnosed myself; but when we had our son tested as a child, I was checking off his questionnaire and thinking, "90% of this is me!". All my life I've struggled to create my own coping skills to work around my ADHD, especially in the last few years when I was promoted into a management position. It was so hard to adapt my old strategies to work with my new responsibilities, and it often still is. I am on chapter 6 right now, and I have marked up so many passages to come back to, and folded down pages. (Yeah, I know you're not supposed to do that, but bookmarks fall out...) I wish something like this had existed in the 80s when I was growing up without realizing I had ADHD. I am purchasing this book for my (young adult) daughters who also have ADHD, and I plan to get the audiobook for my husband to listen to so he can understand more of what it's like for us. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this wonderful resource.

    I love the resources, but I just wish the author was kinder to herself in her words, especially in the first few chapters. I'm halfway between wanting to teach her about growth mindset and just skipping over the memoir parts. Though it's helpful to have relatable content, I am also working on being kinder to myself so the unkind way she speaks about her past self is a little hard to get past. The content does get better, but some parts I had to gloss over.

    Most books I have read on this subject are overly technical or written for a parent of someone with ADHD. This book is easy to read, designed for those with ADHD and while extremely well researched it doesn't read like a research paper. It is designed in sections that are approchable and practical and includes testimonials and advice resourcesed from a large community of individuals with ADHD. Jessica has done an amazing job on her YouTube channel providing resources and information in a maner easy to consume, I was honestly curious if her style would translate well to the written medium and I think it is a great adaptation of the information to the chosen medium. One thing I like is the ease at finding what you want to reference, I have often wanted to rewatch a video because of a technique I saw at one point. I think I will be referring regularly to the book, I might even get one for the office and one for home so it is even handier.
