I've probably read a hundred books on leadership, as well as led seminars for both university and professional groups, and there is not much "new under the sun" in leadership theory and lessons. What Rear Admiral Manazir has written is an easy to read and understand approach--filled with self-deprecating humor, failures, successes and disappointments. Anyone who is the least bit introspective (especially if they have conned a ship, flown an airplane or even driven a car) can look back at an event and say "wow, that could have turned out badly". Even personal interactions between parents and children, spouses, superiors, subordinates and peers can "go south" and Mike Manazir takes a studied look at his life and provides some excellent lessons for anyone who is interested in leadership or general self-improvement.

I really enjoyed reading LEARN HOW TO LEAD TO WIN – 33 POWERFUL STORIES AND LEADERSHIP LESSONS. From the dominating presence up front, to the energizing and thoughtful reviews, to the heartfelt foreward and introduction (and later the epilogue), to the various life experiences in each of the chapters with leadership takeaways and some book options to consider for continued personal leadership education, and even wrapped all the way around to the author’s presence on the back cover.

There are many relate-able stories throughout the book. I really loved the first flyover of the book, where the initial feeling of the book starts off fast and intense and then begins to subtly change throughout the progression of the book, much like career progression. The book was like a nice readable rallentando with the gradual chapter changes and more impactful demonstrated leadership roles as the tone crescendos into stronger, more pronounced fortissimo leadership notes while the length of the chapters shortens.

There were definitely parts that made me laugh out loud many times, but there was also a level of attention to detail and a sense to empower others through recognition of who they are and what they had done. It’s nice to see that the author cared so much about what was happening in his surrounding environment not only with regards to his own heightened level of situational awareness and authority but also that he genuinely cares for others.

Great read and future re-reads. V/R - Chris

With all of the political nonsense going on today in politics, at universities, and high schools, here is a story about one man who did all of the right things in life to climb the ladder of success, to serve his country, to marry his sweetheart, have children, and finally work for a Fortune 500 company. My congratulations to Mike Manazir for doing it right, to lead by example, to live a fulfilling life, and to retire knowing that you made a significant contribution to America 🇺🇸. The only thing left is to run for president. I highly recommend this book if you want sanity in an insane world.

Serving onboard USS NIMITZ with Captain Mike "NASTY" Manazir as a junior enlisted Sailor was one of the highlights of my 22 year Navy career. In fact, the leadership lessons I learned onboard that ship paved the way for me as a leader in the Chief's Mess and Wardroom. Captain Manazir was a leader each of us junior enlisted Sailors respected as we knew he had our best interests in mind. As his Mentorship Coordinator onboard NIMITZ, I was fortunate to have direct conversations with Captain Manazir, which further demonstrated his trusting leadership style and ultimately proved to be inspiring for me. The stories and lessons Captain Manazir illustrates in his book are fantastic examples of why his leadership style has been so successful throughout the years. This book should be a must read for any aspiring leader wanting to add tools to a leadership toolbox. Well done Captain Manazir!

Really enjoyed your book and brought back memories of my days in Preflight class 41-59 and T-28 primary at Whiting in 1960. Had a problem with 4 plane formation safe for solo and Marine instructor had chewed on me whole flight. On debrief, he said " If you think anything about your family, you better quit flying or you are going to kill yourself." Felt lower than whale Dookey. Just recently married and decided to DOR! Thankfully, had Speedy Board. Told my story and- thankfully Skipper said I wasn't doing that bad and wanted me stay in flt. Program. I said if you have that much confidence in me, I'll sure do my best! Changed me from North Field to South Field to get fresh start. As he dismissed me, he said "do you drink." I said " No Sir!". He laughed and said, " what don't you try it!" Went on ahead to advanced and got wings May 1961. Spent 7 yrs on active duty and 30 yrs flying for Delta with wonderful career in aviation. Really thankful for that Skipper at Whiting who gave me a new start. Do think Navy could have better educated us on DOR and Speedy Boards etc.! Really enjoyed your trials with Naval Air and know Even know Admirals can "screw up". Enjoy your retirement "Nasty" and really a great book.

It doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re in—fresh high school graduate on to college, the military, or even a military academy, a midlevel or senior executive in business or a nonprofit, or aspiring Admiral or General—you’ll learn something from Mike’s story that you can apply. He translates how he approaches leadership, sometimes even how leadership approached him and knocked him for a loop, and how to use all of these experiences to shape a life of leadership at each stage of your career.

You’d do well to learn from his experience, think about your own path, and shape your leadership lessons based on what you do every day, alone, with your team, or with your family. You’ll be better as a result. I know I am better for learning from Mike in my role as CEO with Mike as our Chairman of the Board for the National Defense University Foundation. Perhaps the most important lesson is to learn their names, to know your people, and their families. It's work I have to practice, knowing more about my team beyond work, perhaps a lesson I came to late. Mike shows why it's important. He also demonstrates how to help people become their best selves, to let them do the work they need to do for themselves no matter how much you might want to jump in - this comes alive talking about being on the bridge of a carrier. Wow.

As a retired Command Master Chief and current Navy JROTC Instructor, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming a great leader! Admiral 'Mike' teaches leadership through real life experiences. He crafted each chapter into a mini lesson on things to do to become a great leader. His writing style makes for pure reading enjoyment because of the way he is able to convey his real-life experiences in ways that make sense and make the reader want to try it themselves. He tells about some failures he's had and shows the reader why failures can become successes when they are learned from.

I wish this book was mandatory reading for anyone wishing to become a leader. I have recommended it to my cadets in Navy JROTC and I know those who read it will be on a better path to becoming a successful leader by taking on board the lessons in leadership that are in the book.

Bottom line, get the book today!
