The AutPlay® Therapy Handbook provides a thorough explanation and understanding of AutPlay® Therapy (an integrative family play therapy framework) and details how to effectively implement AutPlay® Therapy for addressing the mental health needs of autistic and neurodivergent children and their families.

This handbook guides the mental health therapist working with children and adolescents through their natural language of play. Opening with an extensive review of the neurodiversity paradigm and ableism, the chapters cover AutPlay® Therapy protocol, phases of therapy, assessment strategies, and common need areas along with understanding neurodiversity affirming processes. Additional chapters highlight the therapeutic powers of play, integrative play therapy approaches, understanding co-occurring conditions, working with high support needs, and using AutPlay® Therapy to address regulation, sensory, social/emotional, and other mental health concerns that neurodivergent children may be experiencing.

The handbook serves as a thorough guide for play therapists, child therapists, and family therapists who work with neurodivergent children and their families.

We need more books like this in the therapy world. As a parent and therapist I run into too many parents who view autism/adhd “diagnosis” (?) as negative and grief inducing, it should not be this way. This book is very neurodivergent affirming. You hear from neurodivergent people about their experience and some of the difficulties they have experienced; not because of who they are but because of the constraints that society has placed on them. As Dr. Jason Grant shared in one of his trainings “Being neurodivergent isn’t a disability, it’s the way society treats them that makes them disabled.” If you want to read a book written by someone that gets what it is to be neurodivergent affirming, buy this book. And yes, it does include assessments, ideas for interventions, and an explanation of the process :)

This is a detailed breakdown of the Autplay therapy framework, including theoretical underpinnings, contributions from autistic people, exercises, techniques, session outlines, and strengths-based assessments. I resonate with the philosophy of this book on a deep level. Therapy for autistic people should not be done with the goal of forcing conformity to social norms. Dr. Grant's position (the correct position, in my opinion), is that there is nothing "wrong" or "disordered" about being autistic. Affirmation of neurodivergency is the cornerstone of his framework, and everything else is built upon that. A beautiful and affirming volume.

Got this book as part of one of Dr. Grant’s trainings and feel that it is a very thorough explanation of both neurodiversity and play therapy in general, but then also how to integrate the two for a better approach to be able to work with neurodivergent individuals. Written in a way that is east to read and understand. Highly recommend for any clinical providers, whether in behavioral health, OT, PT, speech, and even within the education fields. Every human could benefit from expanding their knowledge of neurodiversity and this is a great place to start.

I am a MSW graduate student, and I bought this book in preparation to go to one of Dr. Grants AutPlay trainings. This book is by far one of the easiest academic reads. It is engaging, and it is full of so much information regarding the neurodivergent community and how to incorporate the AutPlay framework. I don’t have a lot of experience, but this book gives me a solid foundation of how to integrate AutPlay with my clients.
