A profound new approach to healing trauma, grounded in a radical reframing of how we understand this nearly universal experience

For centuries, we’ve been taught that being traumatized means we are somehow broken—and that trauma only happens to people who are too fragile or flawed to deal with hardship. But as a researcher, teacher, and survivor, Dr. MaryCatherine McDonald has learned that the only thing broken is our society’s understanding of trauma. “The body’s trauma response is designed to save our lives—and it does,” she says. “It’s not a sign of weakness, but of our function, strength, and amazing resilience.”

With Unbroken: The Trauma Response Is Never Wrong, Dr. McDonald overturns the misconceptions about trauma with the latest evidence from neuroscience and psychology—and shares tested practices and tools to help you work with your body’s coping mechanisms to accelerate healing. Here, you’ll explore:

• What is trauma? The latest science that undoes the stigmas of shame, blame, and humiliation
• Moral injury—having our basic sense of how the world should work overturned
• The truth about triggers—what they really are and how they can guide the healing journey
• Traumatic patterns—new findings to help break free from recurring habits and toxic dynamics
• Why we can always rewrite our inner narratives, no matter how much time has passed
• Finding a “relational home” for trauma—how we can help each other return to wholeness

Dr. McDonald’s case studies reveal the many ways trauma can manifest and persist in our lives, yet there’s one factor every case has in common: the trauma response itself reveals the path to healing. “Our traumatic experiences reveal that we can be bent, dented, or bruised,” she says, “but we cannot be broken.” For anyone who has gone through trauma or wants to help others who are struggling, here is an empowering resource for finding our way home to our bodies, rebuilding our relationships, and returning to full engagement with life.

This book is so beautiful. The author traverses the line of sharing her own experience with trauma, being relatable and empathetic, while also able to shine as a authority full of confidence. This is a woman who has done her work, and I feel so grateful to have read her wisdom which has made me feel "normal" in how I have responded to my own trauma. Highly recommend!!!

Having read many books on trauma, and taken many a workshop too, I can say MC McDonald's book is the best one I've read. It's a quick read, yet goes in depth into the newest findings on the trauma response in a way that is easily digestible. She is relatable and her voice is reassuring to the despairing reader.

Thank you, MC, for all of your hard work that went into this book, and for sharing it with the world. This is going to make a difference.

This is probably one of the most important books I have ever read in my entire life. I’ve lived with sufficient therapies, self-help books, kick you in the ar$$ books, etc., and this book left them all in the dust. I had to lean into discomfort, but it was ever so worth it!! The writing is easily digested, incredibly informative and invaluable to anyone seeking some solace from the pain of enduring. It is incredibly self-empowering, and I don’t say that lightly. It’s not a “quick fixer-upper”. It’s life changing.

I'm honestly shocked at how hard it was to put this book down. I have read all of the go to books on trauma, and they are always a bit of a slog. This one was so compelling I read it in a week and hated to put it down every time I had to. No one I've seen so far has been able to put together compelling stories with science in this way. I'm going back for a re-read and wishing I could read it for the first time again. 10 out of 10 recommend. Really beautifully written book that will change your life and everything you think about trauma.

I've tried to read several of the most popular trauma books and really struggled to get through them -- and ultimately gave up and never finished them because they are so depressing. I realize this area is upsetting and depressing, but having trauma myself that I'm personally working through AND reading books on trauma can make you NOT want to face it - Aside from them offering little in the way of actionable steps for the person who is dealing with past trauma.

I say all of this because my experience with Unbroken was completely different. This is the first book on trauma that I actually finished (cover to cover). It was NOT depressing and, in fact, created many incredibly fascinating reframes that have helped me with several important breakthroughs on my journey.

It was interesting to learn about the mind's filing system and to know that the trauma response is actually your body way to protect you in the moment. Learning about different "issues" through other people's stories was also incredibly helpful for me. PLUS each chapter includes actionable items.

This was an excellent read -- and not only did I learn a lot about the topic as well as myself, but I also enjoyed reading the book. It gave me hope to know that we can heal from past traumas when you do the work and reinforced many of the things I'm learning in the process of therapy.

    I highly recommend this book!

"Unbroken" by Dr. MaryCatherine McDonald provides is the understanding that trauma is not a sign of weakness or brokenness. Instead, the book highlights that trauma is a natural response to overwhelming experiences and that the body's response is a demonstration of its strength.

McDonald emphasizes that trauma survivors are not defined by their traumatic experiences and that healing is possible with the right support and resources. By reframing trauma as a natural response to overwhelming experiences, the author encourages readers to see themselves and others with greater compassion and understanding.

Overall, "Unbroken" is a valuable resource that can help readers gain a deeper appreciation for the strength and resilience of the human body and spirit in the face of trauma. The book provides practical insights and tools for healing and empowers individuals to take control of their own healing journey.

I typically do not post reviews, however, I felt this book deserved a review! I have been a fan of MC’s work (love her podcast with her sister, “The Trauma Tapes” and her classes back in the TAT lab days). I was super excited to learn about her book. I appreciated how the book breaks down concepts regarding trauma in an easy-to-understand way. The book shares experiences based on the author’s own lived experiences as well as a composite of clients’ stories. Super relatable to show we are not alone in our journey with trauma. Shame likes to sneak in and make us feel we are alone, but this book shines a light to call out shame and empower ourselves to reclaim our sense of self because we are not broken. The book allows us to understand trauma, the responses to trauma, and a key message that our trauma responses kept us safe and alive. I love the practical tools throughout the book.

I didn’t expect a book on trauma to trigger so much hope. "Unbroken: The Trauma Response is Never Wrong" is a well-written primer on trauma that is a quicker, easier to read than "The Body Keeps the Score" with equally useful content. She distills how the brain processes trauma in a brief but understandable couple pages, explains the impacts of trauma, and provides practical tools for coping with and healing trauma. I finished the book feeling stunned and uplifted by the author’s insight and bravery. A must read for everyone.
